Men's Book Club

Begins Thursday, July 16 - White Fragility

Dear friends,

I am inviting you to join me in an opportunity for fellowship and growth. I am forming a men’s book club that will focus on issues of race and justice. Events in our community, our country, and around the world demonstrate our vital need to continue to address systemic racism in our communal life. It is my hope that we can gather around compelling, challenging books and help each other learn and grow in how we might respond to this need.

As men of faith, Jesus calls us to be our brothers and sisters’ keeper, to love our neighbor, whoever that neighbor is. Our neighbors of color are suffering, and our faith compels us to have a heart for their suffering and do what we can to help. If you are like me, then we have much to learn about the scope of systemic racism and what part we might have in addressing it. I know this is not an easy conversation, but I believe it is a conversation to which God calls us.

I suggest that our first book be “White Fragility: Why It’s so Hard for White People to Talk About Racism” by Dr. Robin DeAngelo. This highly regarded book explores the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged.

I anticipate that this will be a challenging endeavor, but I believe many of us are ready to accept this challenge. Please know that I do not expect us to all agree about the material we discuss, or that the goal of this is to formulate a plan of action. This is a first step in increasing our awareness of, and engagement in, issues of race and justice.

Please let me know (paul@immanuel.us) ASAP if you are interested in joining in this book club, even if on a book by book basis. And if you are interested, please obtain a copy of “White Fragility” and start your reading. I am planning our first gathering to discuss “White Fragility” at my house, 7pm, Thursday, July 16th.   You can also particpaite via Zoom (Once you let me know you'd like to join I'll send you the Zoom meeting link).

I look forward to hearing from you!

In Christ,

Pastor Paul
