Depolarizing Politics

Braver Angels: Depolarizing American Politics

Thursday, April 22, 10 a.m.

Do you see signs of political polarization?   Has it affected relationships in your family, your friends, your neighbors?

There is evidence that our country is as polarized as we have been since the civil war.  Affective polarization (not only disagreement on issues, but personal contempt and distrust) has been growing for at least 25 years.  Braver Angels seeks to depolarize American politics, being inspired by the words of Abraham Lincoln.  Lincoln not only called on Americans to summon the “better angels” of our nature — but called on us to find the courage needed to pursue a more perfect union, “with malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right.”   Braver Angels brings together conservatives and liberals (or “reds” and “blues”) for workshops and events that help participants build relationships with people on the other side, reduce stereotyped thinking, and discover common values.

In this session, we will learn more about Braver Angels, with the chance to discuss how polarization is affecting our communities and nation, and what we can do to make things better.

The session will be led by three Braver Angels volunteers: Ruth Lunde (Immanuel member), Barbara Thomas, and Rick Hotchner.
