Justice Awareness

The ministry of Justice involves understanding those whose life experience is different from our own.

Join the Immanuel community in monthly Justice Awareness learning suggestions so that we are better able to live out Jesus' love for our neighbor, both as a community of faith and as individuals.

Talking with Kids about Racism & Diversity

Especially for Caregivers of Kids

January 2021

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to explore resources for talking with kids about racism and diversity.  Then join other caregivers on Weds, January 27 at 8pm on Zoom for a conversation about your experiences and questions.  The conversation will be moderated by Grace Porter, Immanuel member and Leader of God Squad. Grace is also an Augsburg University Student majoring in Theology and Public Leadership (with a concentration in Youth Studies) .  Register below.

1. Listen to a 20 minute podcast: “Talking Race with Young Children”

2. Visit any of these links:

  • 4 Things We Should All Teach Kids About Racism Right Now
  • Raising Race-Conscious Children
  • 100 race-conscious things you can say to your child to advance racial justice
  • Here's How W. Kamau Bell Talks About Race With His Kids
  • Anti-Racism For Kids 101: Starting To Talk About Race (this resource also includes many great book recommendations)

3. Choose books and toys that teach about and encourage diversity. Some suggestions are:

  • The 2018 Ultimate List of Diverse Children's Books
  • 20 Diverse and Multicultural Toys That Embrace Inclusivity
  • 29 Toys That Encourage Diversity & Inclusion

 4. Watch movies and TV shows that do not have all-white casts, are written/directed by people of color, or feature stories from different cultures:

  • Check out Netflix’s section called “Representation Matters” (you can also put those words into the search bar) It includes diverse movies and TV shows that are appropriate for young people. Recommend starting with  “Over the Moon,” “Jingle Jangle,” and “The Princess and the Frog.”
  • TV Shows with Diverse Characters
  • Family Movies That Celebrate Diversity
  • 17 Family Movies That Celebrate Diversity

 5. Reflect in a journal, with a partner, or with other caregivers in the congregation. Use these questions to jumpstart some thinking:

  • How did your caregivers discuss race and diversity with you? How have you grown and learned since then?
  • What does it mean to you to be actively inclusive versus passively accepting?
  • How will you help the children in your life understand your openness to these conversations, as well as your continued growth?
  • In what ways can you implement positive conversations and interactions around diversity?
  • What are you afraid of in having these conversations? Who can you go to for support or guidance?
Join other caregivers on Wednesday, January 27 at 8pm on Zoom for a conversation about your experiences and questions.
