In baptism, we make five promises that guide our lives of discipleship. Among those promises are to serve all people as did Jesus and strive for justice and peace in all the earth. When we seek “to strive for justice and peace,” we wonder “how,” “when,” and “where” to focus our energy and resources. Below are resources to help you fulfill this promise.

ELCA Resources for Civic Engagement

• ELCA Social Teachings guide us regarding major social issues, including sexism, criminal justice, the environment, economics, racism, sexuality, and more. These statements, rooted in scripture, tradition, and experience, help us love our neighbors as we work for justice and peace.
• Minneapolis Area Synod Initiatives include current ways to faithfully engage with our community. They were voted on by members of churches, including Immanuel, from across our synod.

• “Being a Public Church in the Electoral Process: A Guide for Churches and Rostered Ministers” (March 2026) offers some guidelines for faith communities as they consider how to engage in the election process.

Faith-Based Advocacy Resources

Guided by our Social Teachings, the ELCA works for advocacy in many ways. Here are some Lutheran organizations to aid you in advocating for your neighbors.

• The ELCA Advocacy Action Center provides opportunities to take action on important issues by sending customizable messages to your federal elected officials. The action alerts are rooted in the ELCA Social teachings and provide background information. Sign up for alerts here. Find additional ELCA advocacy resources here.
• Lutheran Advocacy- Minnesota (LA-MN) is our state-specific ELCA public policy office. It focuses on advocacy related to hunger, poverty, and Creation care by working with congregations, coalitions, and legislators throughout Minnesota. Sign up for LA-MN’s network here.
• The Public Policy Office of Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS of MN) engages in state and federal advocacy about the root causes of poverty and injustice. The Public Policy Office provides education about obstacles our neighbors face and related advocacy to strengthen resources for them. Sign up for the Public Policy’s updates here.

Additional faith-based advocacy resources include Bread for the World, Global Refuge, ISAIAH, Joint Religious Legislative Coalition, Minnesota Council of Churches, and Minnesota Interfaith Power & Light. We don’t directly partner with these organizations, but they provide a number of resources, often on specific issues, and networking opportunities you may wish to explore.
