Prayer Walking

A faith habit for physical and spiritual exercise "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

STEP 1 – PREPARING FOR PRAYER

• Decide if you’d like to pray alone or walk/pray with 2 or 3 other people
• Watch this short video about Prayer Walking
• Develop a good walking tempo
• Synchronize your breathing with your walking
• Invite God’s Spirit to guide your steps, thoughts and prayers

STEP 2 - WAYS TO PRAY

Option 1: Finger Prayer

THUMB: The finger closest to you – Pray for those closest to you.
INDEX FINGER: The finger that points the way – Pray for those who teach, instruct and provide care for you.
MIDDLE FINGER: The tallest finger- Pray for leaders and all who have authority.
RING FINGER: The weakest finger – Pray for the weak, sick, and those with problems.
PINKIE: The smallest finger – Pray for yourself.

Option 2: Prayer walk of gratitude

• Naming each blessing as they come to mind.

Option 3: Prayerful noticing

• Prayerful noticing & pray quietly for those around you, the people who pass by, the neighborhood, the places you pass & who they remind you of (i.e. employees at business establishments, health care workers at clinics/hospitals, teachers at schools, children at playgrounds, pastors/congregations at churches, etc.).

Option 4: The Lord’s Prayer on Wednesdays

• On Wednesdays, our ecumenical partners of the Roman Catholic Church have invited everyone to consider praying the Lord's Prayer on Wednesdays at 12 noon (any time zone), so an unceasing prayer around the world throughout the day.

Option 5: Saturday Mornings

• It’s encouraging to walk and pray knowing that others are simultaneously walking and praying, so please let us know if you plan to walk on Saturday mornings.

Option 6 - Other ideas?

• Please let us know how you have found meaningful ways to practice this spiritual discipline.

STEP 3 – REFLECT & CONNECT

• As you finish, discuss – or even write down – the prayers, people, and places of most importance. You’ll be ready for the next round of prayer and you’ll be able to track how God answers prayer.
• If, after praying, you feel prompted to connect with someone you’ve been praying for, make a call, write a letter or send an email. Follow God’s leading and respond with some action.

RESOURCES

• Pray for people who have requested prayer
• Carry a small Bible or note cards
• Using your phone read a portion of the Bible to help you focus and listen to God. You may choose to use the daily Bible readings
• Submit a prayer request so that others can be praying with you
